Here at Proteco, we are rigid with testing and traceability procedures.
From the instant oilseeds are ordered for crushing into oil, a chain of events are set into motion. All these steps must be done the right way to assure that acceptable quality oil is achieved.
Pre-delivery samples are analyzed for oil content, moisture content, Free Fatty Acid levels (FFA) and Peroxide value (PV). If all results meet the parameters of our specification, oilseeds are delivered on site.
“Every batch of oil is subject to thorough testing”
Individual batch codes are generated, recorded and assigned to each consignment. This code acts as a fingerprint and remains with the oil right through the processing, storage, drumming and bottling stages. You will find this code printed on all drum and pallecon labels and also the Certificate of Analyses (C of A).
From every batch of oil we crush, several samples are taken and analyzed chemically for FFA and PV and also analyzed organoleptically and microbiologically.
Retention samples are stored in a stable climate controlled dark room.
Quality control for your peace of mind.

Why is cold pressed oil darker?

When you see dark colour, it represents the presence of “impurities”, material that prevents the oil from being light coloured, odourless and bland in taste. The word “essential” means that we must eat ALA in our diets because our bodies cannot make it. In other words, ALA is an essential nutrient just like vitamin C and calcium. The human body needs ALA to be healthy. Two other omega-3 fats are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are vital for health, but they are not strictly “essential” because our bodies make them from ALA.

Flaxseed oil is a rich source of ALA, reported to lower blood cholesterol levels and help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The pleasant, nutty taste of flax makes it an ideal addition to hot and cold cereals or perfect for drizzling over a salad or cooked vegetables.

Because of the very high ALA, flaxseed oil requires extra care in handling to prevent oxidation. Store away from light and in cool temperatures (<3C).

What about fish oil? Fish oil capsules are the most concentrated form of omega-3 fats, but they may contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs are chemicals used in industrial processes and may cause cancer. Both flax and fish contain important nutrients and belong in a healthy eating plan.

One key difference is sustainability. Flax is a sustainable crop. Fish may not be. For the time being, consumers can enjoy both.

Major upgrades

It is true that we are keen to maintain our identity as a small, personal business, working to human scale.
